DOUBLING POINT LIGHT - Maine
Location: Kennebec River SW of Bath
Currently Operational: Yes
Height: 23 feet
Year Established: 1899
Doubling Point Light stands on a wooded point along the Kennebec River, marking a sharp turn in the river that once posed a serious challenge for mariners. First lit in 1898, the lighthouse played a crucial role in guiding commercial traffic through this narrow and winding stretch of water during Maine’s industrial heyday. The light consists of a small, square wooden tower attached to a keeper’s dwelling - simple in design but essential in purpose. It was automated in the mid-20th century and officially decommissioned in 1988. Unlike many coastal Maine lighthouses exposed to the open sea, Doubling Point Light is sheltered and inland, giving it a quieter, more secluded feel. Today, it is maintained by local preservationists and can be viewed from the water, offering a glimpse into Maine’s rich river-based maritime history.
